The Family Fun Never Ends

San Antonio’s Northeast neighborhood spans a broad area. That means lots of outdoor space. And lots of family fun.

Historically, Comanche Lookout Park, the fourth-highest point in Bexar County, was once used by Native Americans as a vantage point for warfare and hunting. Today, the space is a 96-acre park with picnic tables and 4.5 miles of walking trails for outdoor enthusiasts to enjoy.

Also, Randolph Air Force Base – home to the 12th Flying Training Wing – lives on the Northeast Side. A neighborhood favorite, McAllister Park boasts 1,000 acres, 15 miles of trails, 200 picnic tables, sports fields, and a dog park.

At Morgan’s Wonderland, a 25-acre fully accessible family fun park, everyone is invited to have fun fishing in the 8-acre lake and exploring all of the rides, playscapes, and activities. Come explore what’s new.

Historical Significance

The northeast neighborhood is home to the fourth-highest point in Bexar County at an elevation of 1,340 feet, Comanche Lookout Park. In the past, Native Americans used this hill as a vantage point for warfare and hunting. Also, the hill was a prominent landmark for travelers in the 18th and 19th centuries, as part of the Camino Real extended into this area.

Neighborhood Favorites

Get outdoors for a hike, bike or afternoon picnic with your kids and dogs at McAllister Park or explore the Salado Creek Trailway. Catch a live quarter horse race on summer weekends or a crawfish boil in the spring at Retama Park in Selma. Or, hit the tee box at Windcrest Golf Club, a nine-hole, par 68 course with more than 4,800 yards of tree-lined fairways.

For family fun – on the land and in the water – visit Morgan’s Wonderland, a 25-acre fully accessible family fun park for those with and without special needs, and its new water park, Morgan’s Inspiration Island.

Shop like a local at Cavender’s Boot City and then explore Bracken Village for unique finds in restored historic structures of the Wiederstein-Burkhardt farmstead.

For train enthusiasts, check out the Texas Transportation Museum, which features the largest public “G” gauge, or garden scale, outdoor railroad in Texas.

When hunger strikes, visit local favorite Big Bib BBQ for a taste of the Hill Country. Or enjoy traditional pork tortas and sweet agua frescas, just like in Guadalajara at RO-HO Pork & Bread.
