Considered one of the nation’s top arts destinations, San Antonio continues to build on this reputation with its latest public art exhibition “Makin' Hay” by whimsical artist Tom Otterness. Previously displayed at Stanford University, Washington State University and in Idaho’s Wood River Valley, “Makin' Hay” is comprised of three 15’ to17’ tall figures composed of steel and hay. This two-year public art exhibit begins on March 16, 2009 along the current San Antonio River Expansion Project, near Mission San Juan, one of the city’s five 18th century Spanish colonial missions.
The work of Tom Otterness references an important part of the changing American culture: the farming community. This makes the latest home of “Makin' Hay” an ideal location to highlight the piece’s symbolic message since it was along the San Antonio River that Spanish colonists built missions to nourish the region’s agriculture. Both the missions of San Antonio and the San Antonio River are among the city’s most notable attractions. Now, with the addition of “Makin' Hay” these pivotal San Antonio icons lend themselves as a platform for the city’s dynamic public art scene.
“Makin' Hay” can be viewed just off Mission Parkway at the intersection of Ashley Road. The exhibition of “Makin Hay” has been organized and sponsored by Alturas Foundation in collaboration with the City of San Antonio Committee for Public Art.
