Fredericksburg, Texas

top-fredericksburg-(1).jpgThis quintessential German town of only 10,500 residents sits just an hour and a quarter northwest of both San Antonio and San Marcos. Famous for its food, wine, wildflowers, shopping and annual Oktoberfest celebration, Fredericksburg is perfect for a three night stay as part of your San Antonio and the Texas Hill Country adventure.
Main Street, the town’s historic district, is home to over 150 shops, art galleries, museums, restaurants, bakeries and Biergartens. For a little history, stop by the Lyndon Baines Johnson National Historical Park, The National Museum of the Pacific War, the Pioneer Museum and the Sauer-Beckmann Living History Farm. When hunger strikes, you'll find traditional dishes like Sauerbraten, Wiener Schnitzel and Reuben sandwiches with plenty of beers from Germany and Texas to wash them down. The surrounding countryside offers nearly 20 wineries along with hiking, rock climbing, birding, golf, cycling and Wildseed Farms, the largest working wildflower farm in the United States. When nighttime rolls around, you can catch some country music in nearby Luckenbach Texas, population: 3, and then settle down for the night in a hotel or one of the town’s nearly 400 B&Bs and guesthouses.
