Military Trip Itineraries

1 DAY – River Walk:

Begin your day with a delicious breakfast at one of the many restaurants lining the River Walk. Choose from tasty regional staples, like chilaquiles or barbacoa, delicious pastries or more traditional American fare.

Once you’ve finished your meal, make your way to the Alamo IMAX Theatre at Rivercenter Mall to watch “Alamo: The Price of Freedom.” This celebrated film takes you into the historic battle, adding context, emotion and depth to the 13-day siege.

Next take a short jaunt to the Alamo. Originally a Spanish Colonial mission, the Alamo is where 189 Texas defenders held out against Mexican General Santa Anna’s 4,000 troops in their claim for Texas independence. Explore the monument’s cool stone interior to discover amazing artifacts and important documents.

Continue your tour of historic sites by walking the River Walk’s Mission Reach to explore the four other Spanish Colonial missions set amid the native grasslands along the San Antonio River. All four are still active Catholic parishes. The San Antonio missions (including the Alamo) have received UNESCO World Heritage status.

On your way back downtown, stop by the King William Historic District. This neighborhood filled with beautiful, historic homes and eclectic art was San Antonio’s first designated historical district. It’s also currently home to some of the best eateries in the city, so take a break and sit down with locals and tourists alike to sample from a wide variety of delicious cuisine.

After you’ve satisfied your appetite and explored the area, head back to the heart of San Antonio, the River Walk. This urban ecosystem, the largest in the country, features a network of cobblestone pathways, gardens and patios that follow the river. One level down from the street, the River Walk is a great place to enjoy the scenery as you stroll past shops, attractions, and restaurants. And if you’re ready to take a breather, you can choose to sit back and enjoy a riverboat tour, offering you a serene way to take in the sights.

When you’re ready to move on, head to the Museum Reach of the River Walk. This 2009 extension, featuring native landscaping and amazing public art, leads to the San Antonio Museum of Art. This world-class museum, formerly the historic Lone Star Brewery Complex, houses an astounding collection, including classic and contemporary art, an extensive selection of antiquities and compelling traveling exhibitions.

Once your hunger kicks back in, stroll to the Pearl Brewery. This landmark was first established as a brewery in 1883, but today it’s been transformed into a vibrant activity hub, featuring shops, restaurants and more. You’ll have plenty of food options to choose from, including Boiler House Texas Beer & Wine Garden, which offers discounts for active and retired military members and their families.

When you’re ready, grab a river taxi or walk back to the center of downtown to continue your journey. Once there, you can choose the best bar or nightclub for you. Options range from formal to casual and from energetic to laidback, so there’s sure to be something for everyone. Of course, if your day of adventure has worn you out, just take a load off and have a margarita by the river or grab a booth at the Esquire, the oldest bar on the River Walk, before heading back to your room for a restful night.

When you return to San Antonio, make your way to Market Square, the largest traditional Mexican market in the U.S., to find family owned cafés and colorful food booths. Indulge in authentic Tex-Mex with selections like Enchiladas Rancheras de Queso and Gorditas de Picadillo o Pollo. Once you’ve finished your meal, stroll the area and browse the eclectic shops.
