The Alamo, while famous for its role in the Texas Revolution, also played a part in the American Civil War. This presentation will start with the secession of Texas in 1861, the flight of Federal authority from the state, and the launching of one of the first Confederate offensive of the war - the invasion of New Mexico Territory. The final review, held in Alamo Plaza, launched nearly 3,000 men from the Lone Star State on a strange adventure to conquer the west which reached its zenith at the Battle of Glorieta in March 1862. That summer, battered remnants of that army returned once again to San Antonio, but this time without the pomp, ceremony, and confidence of the year before.
