Overview

The Witte Museum, where nature, science and culture meet, hit an exhilarating milestone in March of 2017, when the new Witte opened its doors to visitors after more than 170,000 square feet of renovation and expansion. Massive new exhibitions on dinosaurs, People of the Pecos and Texas Wild highlight changes at the new Witte, located on the banks of the San Antonio River. The renaissance of the 90-year-old Witte Museum is emblematic of the growth of San Antonio, especially as a catalyst to development of the Broadway Cultural Corridor. The Witte houses a key feature of San Antonio’s 300-year-old history, the 1719 Acequia Madre and Diversion Dam.

This summer, experience Whales: Giants of the Deep only at the Witte Museum! The exhibition uses an engaging blend of science and storytelling through innovative and interactive galleries that give visitors the opportunity to discover more about the world of whales and what lives in the ocean’s depths. Learn about the legendary South Pacific whale riders whose lives have been inextricably linked with whales. Watch a film on Paikea, whale-riding traditions, in a theater incorporated from the model of a southern right whale head featured in the film Whale Rider. See precious adornments and deadly weapons from New Zealand, Fiji, and the Marquesas Islands, fashioned from large whale bones and teeth this summer.
